Bennie loves a good beach breeze! It has been HOT for Marin County this week – 82 degrees. I know for many of you, 82 degrees is nothing. But for us, that is much hotter than we are used to! So Bennie is happy to get up next to the foggy San Francisco bay.
I went and saw my doctor again for the hypothyroidism. I got blood work done again before I left for Boston, and we met after I got back from Boston. I told him that I am feeling MUCH better having been on the thyroid medication. However, I still would have a workout here and there where it felt like all of the symptoms seemed to come back. Mostly these symptoms are what I can only describe as an anvil sitting on my chest, extreme fatigue even though I have just started the workout, cramping and feeling kind of light headed. These symptoms feel the most noticeable when I’m working out really hard (i.e. running a marathon).
He suggested that we double the dose of the thyroid supplement I’m taking. I’m still on a low dose, and we are increasing it very slowly. The doctor did say that exercising as much as I do might mean that we need to continue increasing. I love that he is not just saying to back off running. He has always said he thinks my lifestyle is helping me. Another thing we are continuing to monitor is my cholesterol – it is sky high. I feel weirdly embarrassed that it is so high, as if it were something I can I can control. Hopefully it comes down soon.
I’ve been on the increased dose for about a week now. The medication is a slow release, so it takes a while to build up in your system. Meaning you don’t notice the effects right away. However, yesterday, I was making dinner for John and I, and he commented that I seemed to be extra energetic and bubbly. And I realized, I had been feeling REALLY good the last couple of days. Not so different that I didn’t feel like myself, but just energy to do all the things I need to get done in a day and happy. Kind of like when you are dancing at a wedding, and the SHOUT song comes on….where they start singing, “a little bit louder now, a little bit louder now” and you don’t really notice you are scream singing until the end.
I haven’t had the opportunity to tell if the symptoms will decrease when I work out hard yet. I haven’t done a really hard work out since Boston. But I am getting a good feeling! In the meantime, I am trying to eat well and get good sleep so I can give the medication all the chances in the world to do its thing! I have a track workout tonight, so I will keep you posted!
