For once I actually remembered to pack a holiday themed running outfit haha! Usually I can’t remember to wear the appropriate themed things at the right time even if I’m home. Which is not to say that stops me from wearing 4th of July socks on Christmas.
The bike paths around Alaska are amazing. Supposedly it is one of the mostly bike friendly cities in the world. I can’t imagine riding my bike very far in thick blankets of snow, but this view did NOT suck for the week of running. I did “run” into a moose on my run one day. I was running on down the path, and a big tree moved. Of course the tree turned out to be a moose. I know moose are not all that thrilled about humans, and I also know they can kick sideways (unlike a horse). So I just stood still and didn’t bother it, and he lumbered away. I was pretty scared! I did not take a photo because I was not about to chance reaching my hands over my head to get my phone out of the pocket in the back of my sports bra.
One of the days John & I got to go to the town of Talkeetna. It is a really cute town with lots of gift shops and some restaurants. We went to Denali Brewing Co for lunch. I liked their sour beer a lot while John liked the pilsner more. I am not a big beer fan, but usually I like sour beers.
However, this was the star of the show! French dip on a pretzel bun with sweet potato fries. So decadent and so good. I was pretty glad I had run 8 miles that morning, although I think I would have embraced the chance to enjoy good food regardless!
The main focus of going to Talkeetna was getting to see Mt. McKinley – which seems to be used interchangeable with Mt. Denali. It is stunning on a nice day. We would have loved to have gone to the top in a float plane to walk around the glacier on top. However it was quite pricey and we didn’t really have the time to do it. No matter – it is on my list for future trips 🙂
This was from our foggy morning run on Lazy Mountain. This mushroom was HUGE! We went and got our nails done with the BRIDE(!) right after, but we were so late from the run that we ended up not having time to shower. We were quite coated in mud, so after trying to wipe most of it off with a towel (thank you John!) we showed up to our nail appointment still pretty dirty haha. That’s not me in the photo, but I took it and just really liked it!
