I’ve been doing heart rate training lately and it is very humbling.
My coach and I did a heart rate assessment to get the zones below. At first I felt like mine were way higher than everyone else’s and that meant I was/am “out of shape” – at least in terms of marathon fitness.
She explained that everyone’s heart rate zones are different and what might be high for one person is low for another and it’s nothing to look too hard in to.
The workouts I have been doing lately have been a lot of zone 1-2 with pick ups thrown in. Yesterday’s run was the first time I’ve tested goal marathon pace for any length of time and it was a good confidence boost.
Warm up 1 mi @ Z1 easy – around 9 min
Repeat sets of the following until you hit 10 miles total.
.5 mi Z2 ( about 8:12 average for me)
.5 mi Z3 (7:47)
.5 mi GMP (7:30 HR around 178)
.5 mi EZ Z1 (8:57)
Have you tried heart rate training?
