Yesterday, with the combination of taking a day off from running and daylight savings time, I just felt OFF the whole day.
I woke up at 5:00am, yet decided against using this time for washing my hair. I know, I’m the worst. Enter, dry shampoo. That stuff is the best. I have such thin hair that I often use dry shampoo even when my hair is clean, to give it a little extra volume. Anyway, stop judging me.
Bennie and I volunteered at the hospital yesterday in between work and other life commitments (totally overcommitted yesterday and ended up working until 8:00pm, thank goodness for working from home). He is a therapy dog – so he snuggles with the hospital patients and gets to brighten up the day of anyone there. Sometimes I think the doctors and nurses like it better than the actual patients. There was one lady in particular who was so sweet. Bennie curled up with her in her hospital bed for a while and she just petted him. He pulled on the leash right away to climb up close to her. I think dogs really have a sixth sense about that kind of thing. I am also wildly biased in my belief and knowledge of my dog’s absolute perfection.
I tried my first Blue Apron meal last night. It was shrimp and mushroom dumplings.
Things I was Impressed With:
1. I love that they send preportioned amounts of the spices and sauces. For this dish, you needed about a tablespoon of rice wine vinegar and it came in a small bottle. So nice not to have to go buy a big bottle specially that I will never use again.
2. The produce was PERFECT. Not too ripe, not wilty, not underripe. How!?
3. Their food choices introduce some variety that I wouldn’t normally choose.
4. Easy to follow recipe cards that you can absolutely save and reuse.
Really the only thing that was irritating – I am a pretty decent cook, and the wonton wrappers were frustrating. The recipe said to put 1 tablespoon of the shrimp filling in. I put as much as I could in one wrapper and was still left with a large amount of leftover filling. If I tried to put more filling in each wrapper, they would break.
This recipe came with baby bok choy. You guys, I tried. I made it, and it was NOT APPETIZING to me. Slimy and terrible and no. I had a side of zoodles with soy sauce instead. I love that this will broaden my horizons of food, but some horizons are not meant to be broadened. Especially not the slimy bok choy variety.
I have two more Blue Apron meals for the week, so I will keep you posted!
