Tomorrow is Bennie The Dog’s 8th birthday! Make sure you call him, text him, Face Time, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and whatever else there is to wish him a happy birthday! It is a pretty big day.
I first found Bennie The Dog on an app called Petfinder. I wanted a dog that was about a year old, because I didn’t think I could handle a full puppy. One that was black with short hair, because I wear a lot of black clothes. Also, I grew up with 2 beautiful Golden Retrievers. I loved those dogs, but wouldn’t have minded less hair. I also needed a dog that was small enough to fly with me on the airplane (under the seat). So he was one of the dogs that popped up and I just knew immediately that he was the one.
I was living in Oregon & visiting my parents in California at the time and floated the idea of getting a dog to my mom. I knew I needed to have her on board because I was showing horses competitively. I knew she’d need to be ok with holding my dog’s leash while I showed the horse. When she said she thought it was a great idea, I immediately went into frenzy. I called the shelter and said I wanted to put my credit card down to claim him. I still had to fly back from California to Oregon and I was terrified that someone else would get him before I did.
The shelter said, no. They wouldn’t let anyone adopt a dog without meeting first. As luck would (not) have it, my flight home was delayed. I absolutely lost my marbles in the airport. This would mean I wouldn’t get back to Oregon before the shelter closed. Surely I would lose my dog. I was devastated. This was also on a Sunday afternoon (I think). And the shelter would be closed on Monday. So I had to wait an excruciating day and night before they opened again. My fried Julia came over and watched the movie 27 Dresses with me that night – to help pass the time and cheer me up. I was still inconsolable that I was dog-less. And no, I did NOT want a different dog. We drank wine and sang along to the Bennie and the Jets scene.
The next morning, the moment the shelter opened, they found Julia and me waiting outside the door. I practically bowled the woman over as I walked in saying that I wanted to adopt Noble (that was his shelter name). They brought him out and I scooped him up and that was it.
They kept asking if I wanted to meet other dogs. They encouraged me to take him for a walk and get to know him. To make sure we’d be compatible. I refused to meet any other dogs and took him for a 5 minute walk before saying I was ready to take him home.
I renamed him Bennie – from Bennie and The Jets. “The Dog” got added on when I sent my friend a text with a photo of skinny little Bennie saying, “look what I got!” He responded and said “a cat?” Nooooo silly – that’s Bennie The Dog. And it stuck.
