Ok so first off I want to slap a big fat disclaimer on this. I am not the expert here, and everyone should do what is right for them. That looks different for everyone. No disrespect to anyone who is doing keto or considering it, I am just sharing my thoughts.
I have been hearing so much about Keto lately. Or Ketosis or Ketogenic Diets. I have heard snippets of info, but finally decided to do some searching amongst the inter-webs for myself.
Basically, in terms of a performance perspective – the idea behind keto is to force the body to burn fat rather than carbohydrates for fuel. So it ends up being very high fat, very low carb, and adequate protein and calories. The fats the body burns are “ketones.” Source. This would be perfect for a marathon runner. Everyone’s body has a limited amount of carb/glucose storage, but an unlimited amount of fat storage. So ideal for someone who wants to run long distances and spans of time and not worry about trying to digest carb gels or fluids.
I hear a lot of talk about keto in the paleo and ultra running community. I think the paleo diet lends itself well to keto, being high fat and lower carb as a diet already. And an ultra runner being able to burn fat as fuel is pretty ideal. They wouldn’t need to eat as often, there would be less chance of stomach issues, and their body has pretty much its own source of unlimited fuel.
So, would I consider it?
I have NO interest in being a keto fat burning machine at this point in my life. I am not going to say “never.” Simply because the amount of times in my life that I have said never and then promptly done the opposite is already too high haha! But my main reasons for NOT wanting to go keto:
- I don’t want any kind of restriction in my diet. I am still in a stage where I don’t want to go near a food restriction. I did that for too long and I don’t want a gateway drug back to that lifestyle.
- I like carbs. Plain and simple. I’m not willing to give up pizza with my boyfriend, or sushi with my dad, or drinking wine with my mom.
- One slip up, and you seem to have to start all over again. For those in keto, the moment you eat a carbohydrate, you have to go back to square 1. Any diet that you are fighting that HARD against your body just isn’t something I can see myself maintaining right now.
And those 3 reasons are enough for me! I still find it very interesting to read about. I love the idea, just not the practice haha! And I also love the trend – or the end of the trend really, of low fat diets. I also know that keto is a very effective diets for certain types of medical conditions and I fully respect that.
Have you tried keto? Gone low carb? Was it for you?
