I have been pretty excited for Garmin to come out with their new Fenix 5. I loved the Fenix 3 when it came out, but upon trying it out in the store, it was just way too big for my particular taste. So when the Fenix 5 was announced with a smaller version, I was excited.
I love the look of the metal watch while still having all the Garmin goodness from my previous watch, the 735xt, pictured below.
There are a lot of versions of the Fenix 5 – the X, S and Sapphire versions. And I am honestly not the one to break down the differences between them all. I will link some blogs below that do it much better than I can.
What I will tell you is how I decided on the model and color that I got – I knew I wanted the Fenix 5S, because that is the smallest version. Initially I ordered the white, which is now backordered, so it must be popular. However, I wear a lot of gold jewelry, so the silver on the watch face bugged me. Also, I wore the white band for about 4 minutes and realized how dirty it would get with my lifestyle. I still think it is a beautiful watch though.
I ultimately decided to go with the Sapphire version of the Fenix 5S, because it has the black on black option. As we all know, black is my favorite color to wear.
The black metal watch face is great and looks good with gold or silver jewelry.
The watch comes with an additional neon yellow band, and I kind of love it. I thought I would never want to wear a watch band that color, but its so fun and bright. The watch bands are called “quick fit” and they aren’t exaggerating. You can just snap them on and off. I may be acquiring a grey leather one soon.
For any Garmin, there are additional apps you can download – how many beers you’ve earned, for example. The newest one that is compatible with the Fenix series is Uber. So when your ride pulls up, your watch will show what kind of car and the person’s name, which is convenient so that you don’t have to keep pulling out your phone. My other favorite is the GPS function to take you back to where you started. With my sense of direction (which is terrible), this is a key feature.
It is so much fun to get a new running toy. But I also want to make sure I say this – YOU DO NOT NEED A WATCH TO RUN WELL. You need a good pair of shoes and for those who need it, a good sports bra. Yes, having a watch is a lot of fun in my opinion. It can also lure you into some bad habits, like running faster than your body wants to go, or spending the entire run focusing on the time on the watch and not enjoying the run. I used to run with no watch, then I used a plastic one from Walmart so I knew how long I was gone for, then I graduated to using the Nike running app. Running is a gateway drug to many other expensive accessories.
Fenix 3 vs Fenix 5 (fun fact from this blog – there is no Fenix 4 because it means “death” in some languages.
