If you want to read the full recap of the weekend in Portland, you can read the previous post.
For breakfast – We decided instead of doing a big brunch, we would opt for breakfast at the hotel and an early lunch. Generally, when I am traveling, I like to eat a little bit bigger meals and not snack in between. We stayed at the Marriot Residence Inn in the Pearl District. It was a perfect location for all that we wanted to do, and super convenient for having a pup with us. That way, we were able to let Bennie relax in the room when he got tired.
Post 6 miler, I had coffee, toast with peanut butter and banana, a little bit of scrambled eggs and two mini turkey sausages. I didn’t eat anything before running because I didn’t wake up hungry.
For lunch, we went to Deschutes Brewery. I had an elk burger with a gluten free bun. I don’t have an intolerance to gluten. But one time when I ordered this burger a long time ago, they accidentally gave me a gluten free bun and it was way tastier than regular bread haha! So now I get that every time at this particular restaurant. I got a side salad instead of fries, but I did sneak a couple of my dad’s 🙂
We stopped in the afternoon for a drink and a pretzel at Pearl Tavern. Holy YUM! My dad and I split this. It was phenomenal!
I had a drink called a Chilcano which was really good.
For dinner we went to Andina. It is a Peruvian restaurant we have gone to a couple of times in the past and it was the best as always! I had two of this drink called the Sacsayhuman – which was extra fun since my dad and I actually got to go to Sacsayhuman in Cusco. The drink was SO good! It had pepper vodka, passion fruit puree, and cilantro. I normally don’t like spicy drinks, but the passion fruit perfectly balanced out the pepper. I had to be really careful or I could have had a lot more haha!
We got a causa for an appetizer. It is a cold potato dish that is usually fish, sweet potato, and avocado stacked up in a tower. Its amazing. This one had crab meat in it as well.
For dinner I got a mahi-mahi dish with veggies in a broth. It was also really good.
After more walking, we decided we had to hit up Cupcake Jones again for dessert. I got a mini cookie dough.
Look at how pretty the red velvet is with that candied rose petal!
Portland has amazing brunch spots, but the usually come with a wait – so patience is needed. Having done a lot of them, that wasn’t a foodie priority this trip. But I would recommend checking out Tasty N Sons, Screen Door, Jam On Hawthorne, or Tin Shed.
Mini Rant and PSA to Those of You Stressing About Food:
In the past when traveling for fun, I would bring tons of protein bars and eat them in between meals so that I wouldn’t have to each as much at meal times. I was anxious when eating out of my comfort zone. I am ALL for snacking if you are hungry, and regardless of where I’m going, I almost always have a snack in my purse of some kind in case hanger strikes. That said, I was doing this to avoid eating other food and as a way of being restrictive. It’s not the way to live. Eat the food. Obviously, if something makes you feel bad or is not your way of living (i.e. being vegan on vacation is not restrictive, its your lifestyle), don’t eat it and don’t let anyone pressure you do so. But don’t not eat something just because you are all in your head.
I came back from Portland on Sunday night and woke up Monday morning and my pants still fit. The scale didn’t claim that I’d gained 10lbs. Drink a lot of water, do your workout if you want to, and stop eating when you are full. Or don’t. Being full is not failure. I used to freak out when I got full. But I promise, its ok. My very imbalanced approach to balance has made this idea very difficult for me to practice over the years. Just like everything else, this gets easier with practice too. And just like everything else, I am not successful with it 100% of the time.
I love working hard in the gym and eating well and that helps me be the best me. Just remember that sometimes your best you can exist outside of your routines. Let your foodie freak flag fly.
End Rant. Love you all!
I hope you liked all the food snaps and I would love to know your favorite PDX (or other travel) eats!
