I started using this vest in training for the California International Marathon and doing my 20 mile runs. It is really important that you are hydrating during your longs runs not just to stay feeling good, but also because you want to practice drinking and running. You should feel used to liquid in your tummy during runs, and the actual process of drinking.
I think my favorite thing about this particular vest is the pockets. It has really good front pockets that make it easy to access gels and your phone. It also has pockets within the pack that hold the liquid “bladder” as they call it, a rain jacket, ect. There is even a pocket with a special clip for car keys! I especially love that feature because I’m always so worried about losing my keys. It would be pretty sad to finally get back to your car after 20 miles to realize you couldn’t get IN IT.
I love this vest for a variety of reasons, but have waited to post about it until now because I did have some trouble with it initially. I would go out for a run and come home with a soaking wet back – and not from sweat. At first I thought it might be due to condensation – maybe the water was cold and soaking through? It wasn’t such a huge amount of water that I immediately thought of a leak. I thought maybe I hadn’t sealed it right, ect. I tried SEVERAL runs with it before I finally decided it was in fact leaking. Finally, I did a test run by putting the bladder in a big ziplock bag. Sure enough – by the end of the run, the ziplock was full of water.
This is where REI comes in – my heros. They have the world’s best return policy, so that is where I try to get most everything I can. I took the pack back to them and explained what had happened. They no longer had the red packs in stock, but did have pink and orange. I actually liked that color just fine – and it matched my shoes! So I used it on my next long run and it works perfectly. So easy to fill up, seal and clean. My only negative is that it is a touch hard to suck the water out of the little hose while also running. That said – it is also hard drinking out of a paper cup in a marathon.
Here is a link to the pack. I thought it was a great price for what you get.
