This past week had some not so good and some very good moments for me (in terms of running).
1/22 Monday – 7 miles easy at 9:20 average
Lifted upper body & core after for about 40 minutes.
Monday evening I did a swimming clinic. It wasn’t exactly a workout, but it definitely wasn’t nothing either. My heart rate was up and it was hard! Just because your Garmin doesn’t track it, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. I’ll do a blog post on the swimming clinic on Wednesday.
1/23 Tuesday – 2 miles warm up, 14 x 1 min hard, 1 min easy, 2 mile cool down. 8 miles at 8:22 average. 6:03-6:45 pace for the pick ups. This workout was really frustrating for me. I felt fine doing it, but after the fact I looked at my paces for the pick ups and fell apart. And I am NEVER one to get upset over a workout that didn’t go my way.
I was so so frustrated that I felt that I was pushing hard on those pick ups, yet couldn’t even hold the pace that I was *supposed* to be able to race a 5k at for the majority of the pick ups. It made me feel like all the hard work I’ve been putting in is getting me no where, and like I’ve tapped out my potential, and a bunch of other negative mean things.
My normal perspective is very good – running is for me, and its fun and I love to do it. But we all lose our cool sometimes, even if it is just over someone taking your parking spot at the grocery store. So I just wanted to be transparent that sometimes I get PISSED and frustrated. Just like everyone else.
I do know that this is QUITE a dramatic reaction to a sub-par run. I think stress over work and a particularly bad body image day contributed to this as well. But don’t worry – some Bennie snuggles and peanut butter toast and I was good as new.
1/24 Wednesday I did 6 miles easy at 8:14 average. This was faster than I should have run. I should have run at a recovery pace (around 9 minutes per mile). But I was still stinging from the crappy workout on Tuesday. So I decided to cover up my watch and just run for fun. No looking at paces & no over thinking it. It was fantastic.
I lifted legs after and they were JELLO. Mission accomplished.
1/25 Thursday – 4000 yard swimming, 1:14:17, 1:51/100 yard pace
I ran through the cutest little downtown on this morning and it made me happy. Bakeries, coffee shops, kids going to school. It’s good to remember to switch up your route.
1/27 Saturday – I did a 14 mile long run, first 10 miles easy, final 4 miles cutting down to finish final half mile as hard as possible. The last 4 miles were 8:03/8:02/7:35/7:03. It was my first run with my new running club, Arete! Having friends to push me through the last 4 miles was HUGE. My friend Steph was the reason I ran a 7:03 mile on that final mile.
Saturday night I got to go to Flores for SF Restaurant week with two of my best friends. I had a Paloma, and shared crab tostadas, carnitas, & churros for dessert. It was AMAZING! Much needed.
Sunday was a rest day which was greatly enjoyed. I had fun bejeweling some headbands for races!
And we spent lots of time right here!
