It is so so close to the race! Like most people getting ready for a marathon, it is all I can think about – at the same time I’m tired of thinking about it haha. Let’s just do this thing already!
The pain in the back of my left knee is feeling a lot better today. I am keeping my lifts to just upper body stuff and letting my legs totally recover from each run. I can’t wait to deadlift and squat again once the race is over.
Monday – Stuck to shoulders and chest and physical therapy exercises
Tuesday – did a short run, but called the ball early as I was feeling a lot of tightness in the back of knee and hamstring. I went to the chiropractor Tuesday afternoon and she thought my left hip was out of alignment, so that was step 1.
Wednesday – woke up with SUPER sore hips from the adjustment. I decided to skip my scheduled 8 miler (and you betcha I threw myself a pity party about it). Instead I opted for the step mill, elliptical and bike and did an upper body lift. I also went to the active release therapy (ART) doctor. This has been my saving grace. @babfitrunlife turned me onto ART and I cannot thank her enough! Big congrats to her on her amazing Philly Marathon finish today! Check out her Instagram. She’s a badass runner and person – and she has a great sense of humor.
As I mentioned earlier this week, the ART doc though my meniscus was stuck under my IT band. The session hurt A LOT and I have some pretty colorful bruises. I do think it did the trick though.
Thursday – tested out the knee/leg/whatever in the city for 6 easy miles at an 8:13 average. This is one of my favorite routes to take on easy days because it is so pretty.
Friday – another running rest day. More cross training and work back and abs, then biceps and triceps. Biceps are probably my favorite to work besides leg day.
Saturday – normally I would do my long run on Saturday, but I wanted to have a lazy morning with John before he left for the week of Thanksgiving, so I pushed it off to Sunday and moved my rest day to Saturday.
Sunday – 16 miler on my normal route.
I like to start at 6:30-7am, since that is when the sun comes up and when my race starts. I had Beet Elite mixed with a little Amino energy and a banana with some salted caramel apple Gu Chews (these are DELICIOUS) before I left the house. The temps were about 45-50 for the whole run, so I did a long sleeve with shorts, compression socks and an ear warmer. I had a caffeine free peanut butter Gu at mile 6, and black cherry Gu Chews at mile 11. The peanut butter Gu had gotten really really cold and it was so hard to get out of the stupid packet haha! I will use the salted caramel gus with caffeine for my race. Since I’m going to take 4-5 of them, I don’t want to get sick of the flavor just yet lol. Immediately after my run, I had Xtend BCAAs in Watermelon & an Ah FUDGE NUTS! Picky Bar. I just listened to a podcast with Lauren Fleshman which reminded me how tasty they are. They are also 4g carbs/1g protein ratio, which is optimal for recovery.
I have done my long runs on this same route for last four weeks in a row. One thing really stands out to me each time.
It smells so much like bacon on this route, I feel like I am going to get heart plaque build up from it seeping into my skin. The route is so beautiful, and goes up into the hills (about an 830 elevation gain). There are beautiful homes built into the hillsides. The people inside them must ALL wake up and cook bacon. I can’t really say I’m complaining, but it cracks me up. I saw this little fox today, and there are usually quite a few coyotes and other animals along the way. I wonder if they all salivate over that bacon every weekend.
Speaking of food ~ I’m eating pretty much intuitively for now. I still track what I eat, to keep myself honest. That said, I really want to give my body whatever it needs, and I don’t want to be worrying about looking a certain way or anything aesthetic at the moment. I want to race strong and feel good.
That means lots of vegetables, and good carbs, fats and proteins. And maybe toast or one of those Skinny Cow ice creams at night if I’m hungry. Those things are delicious 🙂
Hope everyone is looking forward to Turkey Day!
