We flew to Austin last weekend for John’s birthday. We were lucky to stay with friends, and they put together an amazing trip for us. I got a lot of messages asking about what we did, and what I’d recommend – so I figured I’d do a little recap!
I ended up taking way less pictures than I normally would – because it was John’s birthday and that’s not so much his thing haha! I had to bribe him for the photo below. We also did a lot of amazing water related activities. Even though my phone is supposed to be “water resistant,” water and phones just generally don’t mix well.
We flew in Thursday evening and had a pretty low key night. Dinner, drinks and we went for a walk. Friday morning I did my long run.
It was super hot and humid, but I got through it. I ran into a friend which helped a lot. I ran around “Ladybird Lake.” This was a place everyone told me I should run, and I had envisioned, you know….a lake. Turns out it is the Colorado River with dams. Still beautiful and an awesome place to run. Even though it was a sticky and hot morning, there were SO many people out.
We walked around a really cute shopping area and then grabbed some food before heading to Barton Springs. It felt AMAZING to get in the cold water after my run that morning. And I am not a cold water person. The pool is huge and reminds me of One Mile from Chico, where I grew up. I loved swimming there.
Friday night we got dinner at a place called Culinary Drop Out, which had my favorite thing ever – pretzel bites and cheese! And then we played Top Golf which is fun to do at night.
Saturday morning, ran 7.6 miles (6 + 1.6 to make up for the miles I couldn’t quite squeeze in on Friday). It was still hot and humid, but there was a breeze which made a huge difference. John wanted to do a WOD (workout of the day) for his birthday, so I joined the boys and did that. It was a lot of fun. We did:
- 21-15-9 tire flips with burpees onto the tire
- 21-15-9 down dog to cross toe tap & step ups onto tire
- Burn out – tire plyos
The gym we went to is my DREAM gym. They had an amazing indoor area, outdoor lap pool, the outdoor workout area pictured above, the lake pictured below, and the lake had a 3 mile running path around it. We jumped in the lake after the workout, and it was the best.
John’s real motivation behind the birthday WOD was that he wanted to be really hungry for Salt Lick BBQ. Vegetarian/vegans – scroll past the next 2 pics haha!
I like BBQ just fine, but not like John does – I thought this was really good! John loved it.
Saturday night, we went axe throwing. It’s starting to become popular everywhere, and I can see why. It was a lot of fun.
John & his friends like to wear themed t-shirts when they go out – don’t ask. This was the first year they brought the girlfriends/wives in on it. Planeteers in case you didn’t know. I had to Google lol – I didn’t grow up with that cartoon.
Our axe throwing coach, Nick, was great and made sure everyone was successful and no one got hurt.
Sunday morning, after sleeping in a little, we went to Deep Eddy pool, which was also beautiful. Texas has a lot of great public pools – which I suppose makes sense. We grabbed pool burger for lunch, and went to a bar with games to watch some of the soccer game.
I really loved getting to visit Austin & everything we did there was so much fun! I cannot thank our friends enough for putting together such an amazing weekend for John’s birthday!
