Hi everyone! I am so excited for you to meet my friend Becky! She manages to keep a marathon training schedule while working 12 hour shifts as a nurse – and still prioritizes the time to stay involved in her community while making some of the most drool worthy smoothie bowls, waffles, and toast in the game.
How did you get started running?
Back home in Connecticut I grew up always playing sports. I was the varsity softball pitcher on my high school team for all 4 years and the goalie on my varsity soccer team as well. Although I was very active growing up, I was never a great runner. I was always the slowest and it was something I had to work really hard at. When I finished high school, I gave up sports to focus on nursing school. I started running as a way to stay fit while I was in college. When I graduated college, I began to run even more since I had more spare time. I spent most of the winters running on the treadmill and the summers running around my favorite lake and trails. I finally decided to sign up for my first half marathon in October 2013. I remember when I crossed the finish line, I thought it was the biggest accomplishment of my life. I moved to southern California as a travel nurse over three years ago and since my move, I’ve made it a priority to enjoy the outdoors and the scenery around me. Running has allowed me to do that. In February 2016, I completed my first full marathon and fell even more in love with running. Every time I sign up for a race, it gives me a new goal to reach for.
What is your favorite race memory?
My favorite race memory is crossing the finish line at the LA Marathon in February 2016. This was my first full marathon that i’ve ever completed. I broke up with my long time boyfriend of 7 years and I truly believe that training for this marathon got me through my break-up. I lived out here alone and waking up early every Saturdaymorning for my long runs was the perfect form of therapy and best distraction to get me over my break-up. Even though I didn’t have family out here to support me at the finish line, my best friends showed up with signs saying “Congrats Becky” and “I run for WINE,” which made me feel supported and loved. Crossing the finish line at the LA Marathon was truly the best feeling.
When do you fit your training in?
I always train in the mornings. When I wake up early and run on the strand, it gives me an hour of peace and quiet before the hectic day begins. I really believe there is no better way to start the day then with a morning run along the beach.
What is your biggest piece of advice for staying injury free?
My biggest piece of advice for staying injury free is strength training!!! Although I’ve had to decrease my time spent in the gym during this training cycle, I truly believe strength training has helped heep me healthy and injury free. I always make it a priority to get to the gym to a lift at least 3x/week. It helps strengthens muscles and joints, which not only help improve my race times but also decrease the risk of injury.
What does a normal day of eating look like for you?
I feel like I’m always eating and snacking!!! I usually have some type of protein bar before my training sessions- Go Macro are usually my go to bars (everlasting joy is my FAVORITE flavor). After my runs or workouts, I usually have overnight oats or a protein waffle. My mid-morning snack is Siggi’s vanilla yogurt topped with granola, nut butter, and fruit. For lunch on my days off I’ve been having avocado toast with a fried egg and veggies (brussels, sweet potato wedges) or if I’m at work I’ll pack some zoodles with eat banza pasta and turkey meatballs. The pasta and zoodles helps to hold me over when I’m at work for my long shifts. For dinner I’ve been having either chicken or a turkey burger with more brussels and sweet potato wedges and I always have dessert at night– my go to is Halo top vanilla or oatmeal ice cream topped with strawberries and cinnamon puffins cereal 🙂
