Have you ever had those friends you meet randomly, and you become friends because they totally get you? That is Kindal for me haha! We met through our coach, KatiesFitScript – and became friends right away. You can check out Kindal’s blog here. When Kindal invited me to visit her in Arizona and run the Rock n Roll Half – I was all about it haha! I love friends, running and the Scottsdale area – so it was a great idea.
The first thing we did when I landed was go get Froyo
Saturday morning we got coffee & hit the expo for shopping and samples. There was Lululemon race gear which was so cute. Kindal and I both love our Lulu – it was definitely a running theme this weekend (pun intended – see what I did there?).
We tried the samples & I tried on the new Garmin Fenix watch. I love the white/rose gold color (“For those who want opulence along with their multi-sport function.” Yes please.) – if they ever make it with an optic heart rate monitor – I might be $600 poorer. Thank goodness they don’t make that yet haha! I also found headbands that were BB-8 colored! So of course I had to get one to go with my cute new coffee cup from my last blog post.)
After more walking around and photo taking, we went to do some shopping at the outlet mall. We got brunch at True Food which was so yummy. Scottsdale has such good shopping and food!
Next we went to Walmart to get some cheap sweats to wear before the race and toss right after. We settled on these fluffy hi-liter colored hoodies.
After we shopped till we dropped, it was time to carb up for the race. We went to Babbo (an Italian place) because Kindal is the best and knows my typical pre-race meal is spaghetti & meatballs. We had some wine, which I don’t normally do before a race, but ya know…#YOLO…or whatever hahaha.
We next morning we got up and headed towards the start line. It was COLD. Arizona has beautiful weather this time of year, but it is still a desert and when the sun goes down, so does the temperature.
Once we had done gear check and made about 3 bathroom stops – we were off! I have never raced with anyone before and it was so much fun! I have also never raced without headphones before and was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn’t bother me a bit. As soon as the sun came up, it warmed up and we were able to toss our jackets and mittens (we both tossed the sweats before the gun went off. The fluffy jackets had molted their hi-liter colored fluff ALL OVER both our black tank tops UGH haha.
The course was nice and flat and the miles went by fast. Unlike the Rock n Roll San Francisco course, there were a lot of bands playing along the way. I took a Salted Caramel Gu at mile 7. There was a bit of a hill at mile 9, but then it went back downhill, so that was a lot of fun. We hit the finish line at 1:41:37 for me and 1:41:41 for Kindal (a new PR for her!! So proud of her!).
After the race, we got our medals engraved (I love that the Rock n Roll series does this) and checked out the finisher’s area.
Once we had wandered and listened to music, we headed for brunch at Butterfield’s – an Arizona favorite for both of us.
All in all a great weekend for racing and fun!
