Happy Monday! Marathon training is happening over here. My mileage isn’t high yet, and my workouts are anything very flashy, but its putting in the time and getting the work done. I’ve mentioned a few times before that I showed horses for a long time and that I was going to dip my toe back into the sport. This past week I got to ride twice, and it was awesome. I realized how much I’ve been missing it. I don’t regret my decision to step away for a second, but it is great to have it back in my life again – even though it is in a small way.
Monday 8/19: I lifted weights & ran 5 miles easy.
Tuesday 8/20: Also lifted weights and ran 5 miles easy. In the evening I went and rode. I ride both English & Western, but both times I rode last week were English. I like both, but I really do like English/Hunt Seat – you have less saddle between you and the horse, and you can feel the horse a little more, and the whole experience is a little more athletic I guess. I love riding Western too – they are both great for different reasons.
Wednesday 8/21: 2 miles warm up, 4-3-2-1 mins hard with 90 seconds recovery, 2 miles cool down. I was supposed to do 2 sets of that ladder, but somehow totally missed that! Very unlike me and I was SO annoyed. Total of 6 miles at 9:04 avg.
I also rode again on Wednesday. I rode at the most beautiful facility near my home & love it. I also did some ironless work – this is where you are still posting in the saddle (“standing” up & down with the rhythm of the horse), but you take your feet out of the irons/stirrups so you are just using your leg strength. I hadn’t done it about 3 years, so I was thankful my muscle memory was still there lol.
Thursday 8/22: 7 miles on the trails with Anna at 9:57 avg with 623 ft elevation gain. You can see the humidity in this pic!
Friday 8/23: 5 miles easy at 9:15 avg. I was sore from running, trails, and riding, so I skipped weights.
Saturday 8/24: 15 miles at 9:15 avg – all easy pace. I didn’t have much shade, so the temps in the high 60s felt hot. I also tried a Maurten gel that made me sick – just nausea for last 7 miles. Not comfortable, but I got it done.
Sunday: 45 min Peloton class
43 mile week.
This week, I am traveling for work & doing a race in Oregon, plus trying to sneak out to ride again once more before I head out of town. So I may be a little light on blog posts this week – but we’ll see what I have time for. Have a great week!
